David Koenig of the AP reports the Trump administration has taken action to extend working hours for truckers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has extended the maximum working day for short haul drivers from 12 hours to 14 hours and expanded how far they can drive. For long-haul drivers, non-driving activities such as loading and paperwork will now count towards their mandatory 30 minute break.

The agency said the new rules will save trucking companies more than $2.8 billion over 10 years. The agency’s acting administrator, Jim Mullen, said the changes “will improve safety on America’s roadways and strengthen the nation’s motor carrier industry.”
Labor leaders and safety advocates fear this will make the US roadway more dangerous.
The changes are scheduled to take place in September.
